The steps to replace a battery from a BMW key fob are pretty generic; however may differ slightly depending on the model of vehicle and type of key fob. One thing is for certain the majority of BMW key fobs use the same type of battery; a CR2032 Button Cell Battery. The following instructions should work for the majority of the BMW lineup.
Smart Key Battery Replacement
For this particular key fob, you will need to acquire a CR2450 battery. The steps are as follows
- Remove the metal key blade from its housing
- Remove the back cover by clipping it off
- Remove the old BMW key battery
- Install your newly acquired CR2450 battery
Comfort Access BMW Key Battery Replacement
This type of key is the most frequently used across the BMW lineup. You can find it with the 1, 3, 5, 7, X3, X5, and X6 Series. The replacement battery for this key fob is a CR2032. Keep in mind if the back of your fob does not open, you may have a version that features a built-in rechargeable battery.
- Press the small tab on the fob and pull out the valet key
- Once the valet key is removed, you will notice a small access point. You can either use the valet key or a small screwdriver to pry the key battery cover off
- Once the fob is on two pieces, you should be able to access the battery. Remove it and replace it with another
Non-Comfort Access Key Battery Replacement
If you have a key fob with a side indent, that means you a fob with a rechargeable battery. If that battery does die, you will need to cut the plastic to get the rechargeable battery out. In this case, our service centre is ready to help.
Sleek Slant Shaped Key Battery Replacement
This key is used in various model years, including 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 F-Series models like the 3, 5, 7 and X3. It uses a CR2032 battery as well.
- Push the button to remove the valet key
- In the opening, you will see a small groove. Use your valet key to turn the groove clockwise
- Use a screwdriver to remove the battery cover
- Replace the dead battery
Diamond Key Battery Replacement
This key's battery is not designed to be replaced as it is soldered to the electrical board inside. If this battery does need replacement, you will need to cut the back and solder in a new VL2020 battery. We don't recommend doing it yourself.
