Performance and Efficiency
Performance and technology meet style and design; ever since its conception some 5 years ago, the BMW i8 still looks very futuristic and something that was dropped off on earth from above. The BMW i8 is one of the most conceptual and innovative vehicles in today's electric market, filled with a host of competitors. A true marvel of technology, the i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car made of carbon fibre that utilizes both an electric motor and a gasoline engine to power all four wheels. The unique powertrain comes in the way of a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine powering the rear wheels with 228 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. An electric motor powers the front wheels with 129 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, making the i8 an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The combined output is netted at 369 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. A high-powered 7.1 kW lithium-ion battery also sits between the seats to assist in the powertrain's transitions. The engine's power is channelled to the rear wheels through a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, while the electric motor propels the front wheels via a two-speed automatic gearbox. Confused yet? Don't be; all this simply means is that both performance and efficiency are optimized. Natural Resources Canada Fuel Economy numbers are rated at 3.4L/100km highway and 0L/100km City. The reason for these eye-opening figures is because the i8 can drive in pure electric mode for up to 55 km, making it a city conquer and highway dream.
